Captain McFinn and Friends: Eliminate Bullying ~ Review

If you are anything like me and you have school aged children, as parent you are always worried about bullying, every aspect of it terrifies me. Not wanting my children to be a victim of a bully and even worse not wanting my kids to be a bully.

What I have found is that bullying (talks and prevention methods) seem to really be focused on middle school and high school aged children, but what about elementary school aged children?

My kids are 10 and 8, 5th grade and 3rd grade and I have already started the talks of bullying with each of them and with the introduction of Captain McFinn and Friends these talks just became easier.

About the Book Series:

Once the biggest bully on Sand Dusty reef, McFinn, a blacktip reef shark, renounced his bullying ways when the Undersea Friends showed him the virtues of helping and caring for others. The vision of Captain McFinn and Friends is to inspire children to make a difference by doing their very best. Each adventure will show that by working together and taking responsibility for our actions and our environment, we can make the world a better place to live in, one child (and fish) at a time.

It is an original, innovative, and educational book series designed to promote kindness and friendship for children ages 4-8.  Children, parents, teachers, school administrators, and camp staff will all enjoy and benefit from this collection of books and activities which includes 3 hard and soft cover books, an activity book, sing-a-long music CD composed by award-winning songwriter Terry Sampson, and educational materials for teachers, parents and the classroom.  eBooks for NOOK, iBook, Kindle and mobile and tablet applications for Android and Apple’s iOS platforms will also be available for back-to-school.

‘Be a Buddy, Not a Bully’ is the underlying theme of this book series.  According to the National Association of Elementary School Principals, bullying has become a national epidemic with an estimated 18 million children in the U.S. being bullied each year; negative feelings from being bullied account for 3 million student absences each month. Educators agree it is critical to educate kids about anti-bullying when they are young to discourage this negative trend.

My daughter loved the book series, the bright colorful pictures and easy to read descriptive story made for an engaging read. The characters were fun and age appropriate and each had a very distinct personality that I am sure your child can relate to at least one of them. The music CD was just up her alley, she has pretty much memorized the words 🙂 My daughter reminds me so much of Bella the angelfish a kind soul who sees the good in everybody.

Disclaimer: I was sent a copy of the book series along with the music CD for the purpose of this review, however all thoughts and opinions remain my own.

  1. It’s every parents nightmare isn’t it, you want to protect your children and I know I constantly worry about it. Great idea incorporating the message in books, thanks for sharing .

  2. Bullying is horrible, and I hope that this series of books helps.

  3. What a great series! Seriously! My niece and nephews were being bullied as early as kindergarten. My son started to get bullied at young as 1st grade. It’s a horrible epidemic and needs more attention drawn to it in children’s literature so us parents and the kids are better apt to handle the situation when it arises. I need to get these books.
